The Novi Sad student organisation STAV (Students Against Authoritarian Rule) says it does not accept the clemency decision that enabled the discontinuation of criminal proceedings against its activists and members of the Free Citizens Movement (PSG). It has called for the legality of the measure to be reviewed.
Background and important distinctions
According to STAV, it wants a court to examine the accusations and establish the facts instead of ending the case through an exemption from criminal prosecution. The organisation also criticised the broader use of the presidential clemency power.
These are the organisation’s political and legal positions. They do not in themselves establish that any particular clemency decision was unlawful or that other people are guilty of offences. Such assessments belong to the competent authorities acting through the appropriate legal procedure.
The statement followed an earlier court decision, described in our separate report, in Serbian, on the discontinuation of proceedings against 12 activists.
