University Clinical Centre Niš (UKC Niš) has performed microwave ablation for benign thyroid growths for the first time at the institution, according to a hospital announcement. Three women underwent the procedure. The Serbian outlet Južne vesti reported the development on 2 November 2026, citing the clinical centre.
How the procedure works and its limits
The technique uses focused microwave energy to treat the tissue of a thyroid lesion without the incision associated with conventional surgery. UKC Niš says carefully selected patients may experience less physical burden and a shorter recovery, although outcomes depend on individual circumstances.
The procedure involved a Niš medical team led by Professor Aleksandar Karanikolić and Associate Professor Miodrag Đorđević, working with visiting ear, nose and throat specialist Konstantinos Čaidas from Thessaloniki.
The announcement concerns benign lesions, not a general cure for thyroid cancer. Microwave ablation is not appropriate for every patient and cannot replace diagnostic testing or an individual assessment by an endocrinologist and an appropriate surgeon. Referral criteria and availability must be confirmed with the treating hospital.
