British ambassador sees hope and uncertainty after Serbia’s Student List election win

UK ambassador Edward Ferguson described the post-election changes in Serbia as both hopeful and uncertain in a 4 November 2026 interview with 021.rs.

Britain’s ambassador to Serbia, Edward Ferguson, said in an interview with 021.rs published on 4 November 2026 that the parliamentary election outcome represented a major political change. In his assessment, it brought both hope for reform and uncertainty about what comes next.

A diplomatic perspective, not a government decision

Ferguson described the student-led campaign, which operated without a single prominent leader, as an unusual political phenomenon likely to attract considerable academic interest. He also addressed the future of relations between the United Kingdom and Serbia as new institutions take shape.

The ambassador said his posting had been extended to 2028. His comments on the election are diplomatic assessments made in an interview; they are not an official Serbian decision on the formation or policy of the next government.

The significance of these political developments will be tested by the actions of the parliament and government, the implementation of reforms and subsequent international agreements. We have separately reported the published election figures in Serbian.
