Alta banka’s bankruptcy in Serbia has raised questions about investment funds that had placed some of their assets on deposit with the bank. On 3 November, RTS described an investor whose units in a fund marketed as low-risk had abruptly fallen in value.
Why an investment fund is not a bank deposit
Buying units in an investment fund is different from opening an ordinary bank savings account. The value of the investment depends on the fund’s portfolio, which may include deposits at commercial banks. Deposit insurance rules and the valuation of fund assets must be assessed separately.
RTS reported that some customers had expected a different level of risk when choosing the product. That is a reason to examine a fund’s prospectus, fees, asset allocation and complaint procedures—not evidence that all funds have suffered the same losses.
Before taking a financial decision, investors should obtain current documentation and consult their bank, fund manager or relevant regulator. We have separately explained how insured bank deposits are expected to be paid out. That mechanism should not be assumed to protect the value of investment-fund units.
