Prosecutors order search of Zabela prison over allegations of vote-related bribery

Serbian prosecutors are examining allegations of vote-related bribery at Zabela prison. A court ordered searches, but no guilt has been established.

The Higher Public Prosecutor’s Office in Kraljevo said it was investigating information that several officials at Zabela correctional facility in Požarevac may have abused their positions or engaged in bribery linked to voting. These are suspicions under investigation, not findings of guilt.

What is being investigated

According to the prosecutor’s statement, a case file was opened and officers of the anti-corruption service in Kragujevac were asked to gather information. The Higher Court in Kraljevo issued orders to search the prison’s official premises for potential evidence relevant to the proceedings.

Serbian newspaper Danas reported, citing its own sources, allegations that prisoners had been offered cartons of cigarettes in exchange for votes. Those claims have not been established in court and do not prove that anyone was bribed or that any individual or political party committed an offence. The presumption of innocence applies.

The prosecutor’s office said it would decide on further steps after the checks were completed. This investigation is separate from previous reports about possible election irregularities in Aleksinac (Serbian-language article).
