The branch of the United Branch Trade Unions Nezavisnost at Serbia’s Chamber of Commerce has proposed making 1 November an official non-working day by law. The news website 021.rs reported the initiative on 4 November 2026.
Why the union chose 1 November
According to the union’s statement, the proposal was submitted to the relevant institutions, including Serbia’s Social and Economic Council. The union says the date should commemorate the 16 people who died when the canopy at Novi Sad’s railway station collapsed and serve as a reminder of the importance of public safety.
The union has also asked student organisations to support the initiative. Filing a proposal does not mean that 1 November has already become a public holiday or a legally mandated day off.
Changing the date’s legal status would require the competent authorities to complete the relevant legislative process. Employers and employees should continue to rely on the current official holiday calendar rather than on the union’s announcement.
