Water levels in the Bačka Topola reservoir are exceptionally low, prompting municipal officials and specialists to consider measures to protect fish stocks. Municipal president Adrian Satmari said preparations include a possible plan to move fish, although no decision to begin relocation has been taken.
Monitoring and contingency plans
According to a report by the Beta news agency, specialists from the Faculty of Sciences are monitoring conditions and additional water-level instruments are expected to be installed. Satmari said relocation might not be necessary during winter, but preparations should nevertheless be in place.
The problem is also linked to the unfinished Orom–Čik–Krivaja canal. Municipal representatives say that roughly 15 kilometres of its planned route remain to be built. They consider the project potentially important for neighbouring municipalities as well.
Preparing for the possibility of moving fish is not the same as carrying out an evacuation. Residents and anglers should check the latest lake conditions and any fishing restrictions with the competent authorities and the site’s management.
