Novi Sad

Novi Sad is the second-largest city in Serbia and the administrative center of the autonomous region of Vojvodina. With a population of about 250,000 within the city and over 400,000 in the metropolitan area, it holds an important position in the country’s economic, cultural, and educational spheres. Thanks to its favorable location on the banks of the Danube River, modern development, and rich historical heritage, Novi Sad is becoming increasingly popular among both local residents and foreign tourists.

The city is known for its landmarks and cultural sites. The main attraction is the Petrovaradin Fortress, located on a high Danube bluff, offering stunning views of the city and river. In the city center is Freedom Square, a bustling area with beautiful architecture, cafes, and shops. Novi Sad hosts numerous museums, theaters, and galleries, including the Museum of Vojvodina and the City Museum. The city is famous for its festivals, the most notable being EXIT — one of the largest music festivals in Europe, attracting thousands of visitors worldwide. Additionally, the city actively develops its culinary traditions, blending Serbian, Hungarian, and other cuisines.

Novi Sad is considered a safe city with a relatively high standard of living. Housing, food, and transportation costs are moderate and often lower than in the capital. Healthcare is well-developed, and the ecological situation is good due to proximity to green areas and the Danube River. The transport system includes buses and trolleybuses, as well as rail connections to Belgrade and other regions. While the city does not have a metro system, its infrastructure is continuously improving. The international airport “Konstantin Veliki” provides connections to key European destinations.

The economy of Novi Sad is dominated by industry, IT, agriculture, and services. The city is attractive to investors because of its skilled workforce and growing business clusters. Wage levels and tax rates are competitive, encouraging the growth of companies and startups.

In education, Novi Sad stands out with the University of Novi Sad and several international programs and schools. The university has a high reputation and attracts students from various countries, especially in technical and humanities fields.

Regarding entertainment and leisure, the city offers numerous cafes, restaurants, parks, and sports facilities. One popular recreational area is Fruška Gora National Park, located near the city, where visitors can enjoy nature, hiking, and cycling routes. Novi Sad’s nightlife is quite active, especially in the city center and along the Danube riverbanks.

The climate of Novi Sad is moderately continental, with warm summers and cold winters. The city’s proximity to the Danube River and Fruška Gora National Park allows easy access to nature and a variety of outdoor activities.

The city is divided into several neighborhoods, each with its own character: city center, Adice, Satelit, Liman, Detelinara, and others, offering both modern residential complexes and traditional quarters.

Historically, Novi Sad was founded at the end of the 17th century and has been influenced by various cultural and political powers — from the Ottoman Empire to Austro-Hungary. Today, the city is known for its multiculturalism, openness, and hospitality of its residents.

Novi Sad is becoming an increasingly popular destination among foreign tourists — in 2024, the city welcomed about 600,000 visitors, including many Europeans and tourists from Asia and the USA. Visitors come for the festivals, history, architecture, and the warm hospitality of the local population.

Overall, Novi Sad is a modern, dynamic, and attractive city that combines cultural heritage and innovation, comfort, and opportunities for living, working, and leisure.
